GPFA Commemorates International Day of the Girl Child, Promoting Safe and Confident Online Participation
The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA) commemorated the International Day of the Girl Child with a celebration themed “Girls and Online Life,” focused on empowering girls to navigate the digital world safely, confidently, and creatively.
The event brought together students from 17 schools, school administrators, facilitators, GPFA volunteers, and staff to explore the opportunities and challenges girls encounter online. Through interactive discussions, student presentations, role plays, and mentorship sessions, participants reflected on their digital experiences and explored ways to build safer and healthier online habits.
An opening plenary conversation invited girls to share what they enjoy about being online, alongside the opportunities, concerns, and worries that shape their experiences. The discussion created space for participants to share their perspectives and learn from one another.
Under the topic “Think Before You Click,” participants explored responsible internet use and the importance of making thoughtful decisions online. A session on “AI: Fake vs. Facts” examined artificial intelligence and the need to distinguish reliable information from misleading content.
Turning these discussions into personal action, the “My Digital Plans” activity invited each participant to write five commitments toward a safer and healthier online life. A digital declaration also formed part of the program, reinforcing the focus on responsible online participation.
