Seventy New Scholars Join the Gbowee Peace Foundation Family

Monrovia, Liberia, October 1, 2026: The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa officially welcomed its newest cohort of scholars at the Scholarship New Recruit Acceptance Program, held at the Foundation's Head Office on Robert's Field Highway. Seventy young Liberians, drawn from universities across the country, were formally received into the scholarship family at a ceremony that blended celebration, reflection, and a clear call to service.

A Day of Promise

For many of the scholars, the program marked the moment a long-held hope became real. Parents, guardians, university representatives, and foundation staff gathered at the head office, and the mood was one of pride and anticipation. Each scholar was recognized individually, a small gesture that carried real weight for students who have worked hard, often against difficult circumstances, to earn their place.

These recruits come from a range of Liberian universities and fields of study, a diversity the Foundation sees as one of its greatest strengths. Bringing together young people from different campuses, communities, and counties builds the kind of bridges that lasting peace depends on.

More Than a Scholarship

The Gbowee Peace Foundation's work rests on the belief that education and peace are inseparable. Founded by Nobel Peace laureate Leymah Gbowee, the Foundation invests in people, especially women, girls, and young leaders, who can shape a more peaceful and equitable Liberia.

In keeping with that vision, the scholarship offers more than financial support. Scholars are expected to grow as leaders, take part in Foundation activities, and put their education to work for their communities. Speakers at the program stressed that the scholarship is both an opportunity and a responsibility.

A Charge to the New Scholars

Scholars were encouraged to take their studies seriously, to uphold integrity in all they do, and to see themselves as ambassadors of peace on their campuses. They were reminded that those who have received support are now positioned to lift others, whether through mentorship, volunteerism, or the example they set.

Representatives of the Foundation also thanked the partners, donors, and supporters whose generosity makes the scholarship possible, noting that every seat filled represents a community that believes in Liberia's future.

Looking Ahead

With the acceptance program complete, the new scholars begin the next chapter of their journey. The Foundation will continue to walk alongside them through their academic years, offering guidance and opportunities to develop as leaders.

These Scholars will now carry the Foundation's name and mission into lecture halls and communities across Liberia. If their energy at this program is any indication, the country has good reason to be hopeful.
